What is Appreciative Inquiry?

"Appreciative Inquiry (“AI”) – to appreciate means to value – to understand those things worth valuing. To inquire means to study, to ask questions, to search. AI is therefore a collaborative search to identify and understand your organisation’s strengths, greatest opportunities and people’s aspirations and hopes for the future." 

Appreciative Inquiry is a positively framed, strength-based approach to organisational development. Focusing on the ‘positive core’ of an organisation helps to design or redesign the systems for the advancement of effective and sustainable change. It prevents the natural tendency to waste time seeking to overcome or minimise weaknesses. AI is not a ‘top down’ or ‘bottom-up’ change process, but rather a ‘whole system’ approach.

THE 5 DIMENSIONS OF APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

Define

What is the topic of inquiry?  What is the project’s purpose? The content? What needs to be achieved? 

Discover

Start by identifying and appreciating the best of ‘what is’. What organisational and individual strengths already exist in areas of leadership, relationships, technologies, processes, structures and values, to drive wellbeing priorities? 

Dream

An invitation to amplify an organisation’s positive core by imagining the possibilities for the future. The strategic focus takes shape through combining the best of ‘what is’ with the best of ‘what could be’. 

Design

Bringing together the stories from discovery and the imagination and creativity from dreaming. Combining the ‘best of what is’ with ‘what might be’, to create the ideal, ‘what should be’. 

Deliver

Creating ‘what will be’. How will the project design elements be delivered? Imbedded?  Measured for impact? Evaluated and revised?
